How noise matters

چکیده

Recent advances in evolutionary game theory have employed stochastic processes of noise in decisionmaking to select in favor of certain equilibria in coordination games. Noisy decisionmaking is justi ed on bounded rationality grounds, and consequently the sources of noise are left unmodelled. This methodological approach can only be successful if the results do not depend too much on the nature of the noise process. This paper investigates invariance to noise of the equilibrium selection results, both for the random matching paradigm that has characterized much of the recent literature and for a larger class of two-strategy population games where payo s may vary non-linearly with the distribution of strategies among the population. Several parametrizations of noise reduction are investigated. The results show that a symmetry property of the noise process and (in the case of non-linear payo s) bounds on the asymmetry of the payo functions su ce to preserve the selection results of the evolutionary literature. Enhancement of Noise Performance in Digital Receivers by Over Sampling the Received Signal

In wireless channel the noise has a zero mean. This channel property can be used in the enhancement of the noise performance in the digital receivers by oversampling the received signal and calculating the decision variable based on the time average of more than one sample of the received signal. The averaging process will reduce the effect of the noise in the decision variable that will approa...

Estimation of internal noise using double passes: Does it matter how the second pass is delivered?

Human sensory processing is inherently noisy: if a participant is presented with the same set of stimuli multiple times and is asked to perform a task related to some property of the stimulus by pressing one of two buttons, the set of responses generated by the participant will differ on different presentations even though the set of stimuli remained the same. This response variability can be u...
